With the Corona Virus Pandemic currently affecting the World and specifically South Africa and iMed laboratories’ testing focus towards protecting the health and safety of South Africa’s, iMed recently extended their laboratory services to include Covid-19 diagnostic testing. With no time to spare, iMed established the required infrastructure in a record time to perform molecular based diagnostic testing for Covid-19.

World-class facilities
Our facilities are designed to control contamination making use of mechanical barriers and spatial separation with 3 separate rooms for specimen preparation, reagent preparation and product detection, each with separate sets of equipment and supplies.
Maximum biosafety
Our sample preparation room is also designed to provide maximum biosafety through HEPA filtered airflow with negative air pressure.

Our Laboratory design is supported by laboratory practices and controls to ensure contamination control and monitoring.
The COVID-19 RT-PCR test is a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in upper respiratory specimens such as nasopharyngeal swabs. Our PCR target three different viral genomic regions, reducing the risk of false negatives.
Our Laboratories are sufficiently equipped with a workflow and methodology, supported by a Laboratory Information System (LIMS), to facilitate maximum sample through-put within a minimum turnaround time. Our LIMS is set-up to allow for automated data capturing and reporting, limiting inaccurate reporting, normally the result of incorrect manual data capturing.
